Timber Mountain-Sunday 4-15-2007
It has stopped raining and the sun is out, leaving an awesome tacky terrain. Good turn out again.
1st Alex Gragg 2:44:50 2nd Daniel Ferguson 2:48:59 3rd Reid Brown 2:51:40 4th Dereck 2:55:05
Alex #242 I was towards the back off the start, but who cares the sun was shining. Reid Brown was again up front followed by Devon Bolin and Daniel Ferguson. Before the first corner Devin slid out a little giving way to Daniel. I moved through the pack. By the time we hit the road section the same group was out front as yesterday Reid, Devon, Daniel. And we were all bait for Garrison who I could hear coming from behind quickly. Devon tried to get by Reid and took a line that proved to be disastrous for him he hit a rock that had been dislodged when Reid hit it and he yard sailed. Daniel was right behind Devon and couldn’t help but hit his bike. It was quite a get-off one of the most impressive I’ve seen, but he got right up. Devon rode in but he was done. I knew Garrison was up front now and had pulled away. I didn’t see him going into the pit at the end of lap one. I spent the whole second lap chasing him and thinking I was going so slow I couldn’t even hear him, I was on the gas trying to get to him. I was quite surprised when I pitted and he helped me get gas. I made an extra pit stop starting the last lap to check my chain, which I knew, was on its last leg and might break anytime. I had a decent lead and was able to take it easy on the last lap and cross my fingers, but the chain made it. Wrapping up my 2nd overall for the weekend win! Reid you rode awesome this weekend! Nice hole-shots!
Garrison # 42 I was trying a new strategy today: leave last off the line (okay so I didn’t know I was going to try that till it happened). I like a challenge. I picked my way up the ranks. By the time we hit the road about four miles into the 15-mile lap I could see the leaders ahead of me. Alex, Daniel, Devon and Reid up front. I flew down the road picking them off. I clearly saw Devon’s get off. I slowed down to see if he was ok! I really didn’t think he would be getting up from that but before I could stop he had jumped up. So I kept going. I left the shale road with the lead and a major back flat tire. (I normally run a Michelin MOOSE bib but it’s on back order). I held my position for the next 13 miles and pulled a 45 second lead to finish lap one but I pulled into the pit to inspect the damage and was done, DNF. Handing the lead off to my Bro Alex who was following in second. Go Bro!
Eddie #27 I should have known that hole-shot yesterday was one of a kind. I got my mid packer today. I didn’t like the course as well on Sunday. Although glad it wasn’t raining. They took out some of the knurliest technical stuff because it got tore up badly (can’t blame them for that). Today was more high speed. I did get a good battle going with Smokin Joe we stayed a bike length or so apart for three laps taking turns for the lead. He started backing down fearing for his tire, but he still ended up with a flat. I got away and he finished one lap down. It was fun while it lasted. It was great to see our pal Mike Wolfe come out, he was doing awesome from the 30 Expert row had moved up to mingle with the tail end of the AA’s. He got a flat on his last lap. Next time Mike! I finished 2nd today just less than two minutes behind Dad Beardsley.
Scott #83 I was way happier with the Sunday conditions. And I am typically better in the fast stuff. I beat Eddie by about 40 seconds yesterday. But today I got the old guy by about four minutes. We’ll be putting him out to pasture soon. I passed a lot of lap traffic. I got a little crazy trying to pass once and took myslelf off into the woods and tumbled off the bike. I had a good time. But I did get confused and came in thinking the race was over a lap early. I took a couple explanations to straighten me out that make for a long last lap. I missed P- Doggy today, but he froze yesterday. We did a total of 73 miles on Sunday, David Morton won Open Expert I was again 4th .
Ant Man #39 Now these conditions are more my style. There were not any youth riders , some 15 and 16 year olds and of coarse older. I left at the tail end of the amateurs. I set my pace to catch and pass as many of those ahead of me as I could. I caught the first one about a quarter of the way through the first lap; I was able to pick off a few more before the end of lap one. I had just one crash on my last lap; I hit a rock and went down. I got up quickly and no one passed me. I was happy with my riding and I had fun!
